As many of you heard last week, Whole Foods voluntarily took Kombucha off the shelves due to high alcohol levels.
here's the original story I read last week:
Whole Foods Market has yanked kombucha teas from its store shelves after discovering the popular fermented drinks contained elevated levels of alcohol, a company spokeswoman said Friday.
The grocery store chain known for its wide array of wholesome and organic foods sells kombucha teas, which it notes in a blog posting is "revered for its ability to promote good health and has helped millions of people with its excellent detoxifying, metabolic balancing and immune-enhancing qualities."
But several days ago, Whole Foods pulled the beverages because of elevated alcohol levels that weren't reflected on the labels. The company is awaiting their suppliers to update their labels. Under government regulations, products containing alcohol levels of 0.5% or more need to carry warning labels.

What does this have to do with Lilo?
This article was pretty funny, so I just re-posted instead of summarizing....No Hollywood tea for Texas: Lindsay Lohan sets off a kombucha scare at Central Market & Whole Foods
By Sarah Rufca
If your vegan waitress, yoga instructor or pet therapist seems a little off lately, blame Lindsay Lohan.
When the actress/hot mess set off her court-required alcohol monitoring SCRAM bracelet after the MTV Movie Awards earlier this month, she blamed kombucha, the herbal-bacterial tea beloved by Hollywood- and granola-types for its reported health and digestion benefits.
But after the Lohan debacle, vendors are questioning whether the kombucha drinks contain an alcohol by volume above 0.5%, the amount that's required for a government warning.
Concerns are great enough that stores like Whole Foods and Central Market have voluntarily pulled the drink from their shelves while suppliers perform more tests to resolve potential labeling issues.
Unfortunately for Lindsay, even at higher-than-advertised levels officials say it's "unlikely" kombucha could set off the monitor.
Many "non-alcoholic" beverages contain trace amounts of alcohol produced in the brewing process, including Sprite, 7UP, ginger ale and notably, Fentimans Victorian Lemonade, which was banned from sale to minors in Maine due to its 0.3 percent alcohol content.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission did not immediately return calls on whether the agency would be taking a role in monitoring kombucha.
I say: Booooooooooooo!!!!!
So, I thought it was just Whole Foods, since they said it was "voluntary"...I thought MAYBE, I could stock up on my Komucha at Giant, since mine carries it in their Organic Section....
Nope.
When I ran there after the gym today this is what I found:
Whole Foods already FILLED the shelves where Kombucha was once stored; no posting, nor sign of hope. Bastards.
come back soon, plz :'(
Wishful thinking on my part...didn't want to accept that it was an "official" recall.
Thanks to my friend, Jen's post on facebook today, I learned another disturbing thing about the products people consume that are thought to be "healthy." Surprise, surprise. This does not effect me directly (even though I HAVE eaten it from time to time)..however, many of my clients tgo here for quick healthy meals, as well as my hubby.
The High Fructose Corn Syrup in Subway's so-called "healthy" Breads!
Here's the ingredient list of Subways 9 Grain Wheat Bread:
9-GRAIN WHEAT Enriched wheat flour (wheat flour, barley malt, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), water, yeast, high fructose corn syrup, whole wheat flour, wheat gluten, contains 2% or less of the following: oat fiber, soybean oil, salt, wheat bran, rolled wheat, rye nuggets, dough conditioners (DATEM, sodium stearoyl lactylate), yeast nutrients (calcium sulfate, ammonium sulfate), degermed yellow corn meal, rolled oats, rye flakes, caramel color, triticale flakes, parboiled brown rice, refinery syrup, honey, barley flakes, flaxseed, millet, sorghum flour, azodiacarbonamide, natural flavor (maltodextrin, natural flavor, silicon dioxide, lactic acid). Contains wheat.
Other Subway products containing HFCS:
- 9-Grain Wheat Bread
- Sourdough Bread
- Oven Roasted Chicken Strips (Teriyaki Glaze)
- Meatballs
- Chipotle Southwest Sauce
- Fat-Free Honey Mustard (first ingredient)
- Chocolate Chunk Cookies
- All Fruizle Express Flavors
First off, aside from the HFCS, the ingredient list on that bread is long as H-E double hockey sticks.
If you missed it before....and you are not really familiar as to WHY HFCS is bad (but know that it "just is") I will briefly explain:
Fructose, which is fruit sugar, is found together with glucose & sucrose in honey and fruit, in nature. It's the sweetest of sugars. Large quantities of of fructose is manufactured inexpensively by changing the glucose in cornstarch to fructose (high fructose corn syrup), so instead of the end product being glucose & sucrose; it's glucose and fructose. Studies have proven that this type of fructose goes right to fat storage. This research showed "high-fructose corn syrup" goes directly to the liver, releasing enzymes that instruct the body to then store fat. This may elevate triglyceride (fat in blood) levels and elevate cholesterol levels. This "fake" fructose may slow fat burning and cause weight gain; and is also shown to have a direct link to obesity and type II diabetes in children. In these studies; the children with "adult-onset diabetes" were saturated with fat to the point that no more fat was being accepted by their cells, leaving insulin to float around freely in the blood stream with no where to go. Furthermore, fat floats around ending up in the pancreas, clogging and destroying beta cells responsible for insulin production. Oh, yeah, and this genetically modified food, consists of 99%+ pesticides. Nice.
How can YOU take action. There's a petition going around to urge Subway to take it out of their products. I signed it as soon as I saw it!
Even Jillian Michaels is getting involved, subway is one of the main sponsors on her show, The Biggest Loser. She said this on facebook : “Had NO idea Subway had HFCS in their bread til you guys pointed it out,” referring to her followers. Fans have been very vocal about their dislike of the blatant product placements during Biggest Loser episodes. “We’re obligated to do show integrations per NBC contract. We’re not paid for them. However, I only do the ones I eat personally,” Jillian responded via this particular Facebook thread. “I eat the veggie 1 all the time but, the HFC is a bummer.”
No Really, Jillian? That's the thing that sucks about fame, you sometimes have no control over the products you are associated with. On the contrary, there are products you can control...I lost a lot of respect when Jilly started peddling potentiall toxic fat burners on QVC. I do however respect her speaking out about HFCS, and urging Subway to stop messing around.
On the bright side I had a FANTASTIC workout today!
Lots of body weight exercises and plyometric intervals! It'll make you wanna Shoop Shoop Shoop!
Last song on my play-list : /
Decided against the triple header tonight....WAYYYYY too long to be in a theater. I feel like I'd fall asleep by the time they showed Eclipse...which would be a waste. I bought my tix for tomorrow, going with my BFF and cousin, Jackie! Can not WAIT!!! Don't worry, no spoilers for you Twi fans that didn't read the books. I HIGHLY recommend you put aside any summer reading and get on it if you haven't. They are AMAZING!!
Off to do some "prepping" for the premier tomorrow...i.e. potential double header in my living room?
What's a song...or artist...playlist...genre... that gets you "pumped" for your workout????
xoxo

ReplyDeleteEveryone that has commented here I DID NOT DELETE YOU!! BLOGGER ACTING UP AGAIN :( WORKING ON RESTORING COMMENTS, BOOOO :(
I've tried kombucha beverages in the past and just couldn't handle the weird bitterness. It left quite an aftertaste, and I noticed co-workers grimacing after they'd take a swig too. Maybe it was the alcohol in it that made it so.
